How To Get Her To Say Yes!

I recently read a Yahoo article on how not to propose for a marriage.  Do not propose in a sports setting or big event, by putting your engagement ring in food or drink, and my favorite over the phone. So with advices and caveats on how not to propose for a marriage, my concerns were what was the right way, no scratch that, what were the most captivating ways of having your girlfriend say yes?

I had dated my girlfriend for about three years and I knew that she was going to be my future wife. I wanted to do something special, maybe something even unorthodox to propose to her which will completely leave her speechless. But how?

I proceeded to contact my best friend of 17 years for some advice.  After spending around what seemed like 3 hours or so, I regretted ever talking to him about proposal ideas.engagement-ring

Me: Andrew, I’m thinking of proposing to my girlfriend soon. I need some ideas.

Andrew: Congratulations! I don’t know man, what do you guys love doing together?

Me: We’re homebodies, we love watching T.V. and reading.

Andrew: Hmm… Maybe you should have me call her and propose for you? I can say something like; you would like to take her hand in matrimony.

Me: I don’t think that’s a good idea, we’re not in elementary school anymore. I’ll personally propose to her.

Andrew: How about reading a book together on a lovely Sunday afternoon?

Me: Good idea, what book should we read?

Andrew: Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman.

Me: You’re crazy!

This went on for a couple more hours, until I told him Thanks, but no thanks.

As I propose to my girlfriend, and I’m sure everyone else feels the same, I just want it to be special and memorable where the place, timing, and message all comes together for the both of us.

I reverted back to Google and found some great and innovating marriage proposals that apparently work.  Read below and perhaps, it’ll give you guys some hot ideas on how to make your proposal the perfect one. Cheers.

1. Arrange to meet her in a beautiful park near some riding stables. Rent a knight’s armor from a costume shop or theatrical company and pick it up on the way. Rent a horse at the stables, don the armor, ride up to meet her and offer to be her prince. Present the loose diamond with princely flair on bended knee. You could have someone in the bushes nearby ready to play Holst’s “Jupiter” as she starts to see you in the distance.

2. Cook and set an elaborate candlelight table (or cater if you are not talented in the kitchen) for a quiet romantic dinner for two at home. Serve her a glass of champagne with the diamond ring in the bottom or ribboned to the stem.

3. Have an artist paint her portrait, adding a box with a loose diamond in her hand before you present it. When you present the portrait, have the ring ready when she asks about it.

4. Bring home a sweet stuffed animal with a ribbon for a collar. Have the ring in the bow for her to find as she cheerfully greets her new friend.

5. Have a plane sky-write your proposal. Plan it for the day of a family picnic, boat ride or other outing so she is sure to see it. Have your loose diamond ready when she sees your proposal.

6. Hire a magician to entertain just the two of you. Have the magician make the box with the loose diamond mysteriously appear as the surprise ending of the last trick.

7. Memorize a short French poem and recite the poem to her at a French restaurant as you offer the ring. Be sure to know what each word means so you can demonstrate your savoire faire. Have the loose diamond ready in a presentation box.

8. Decorate a Christmas tree with lights and only one ornament — a ribbon or bow tied around a velvet ring box. Ask her over for a Christmas celebration for just the two or you.

9. For a very traditional approach, ask her father for her hand in marriage. When the approval is given, make plans for the next family gathering and make your proposal to her in private with diamond in hand. When she says yes, stand up and announce your engagement to everyone.

10. Prime a friend with harmless little secrets about the two of you, and have him pose as a psychic when you dial. Be sure to ask the right personal questions to make it look authentic. Have the psychic predict a diamond in her very near future. Then make your proposal on the spot.

Beach or Bust

celebrity-starfish-message-in-a-bottle-with-optional-rhinestone-monogrameWatching ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ last night on TLC, I was curious if my future wedding preparation would end up as chaotic as some of the brides on this show. And this was coming from a guy!

As I got to thinking about the detailed and meticulous process of preparing for my future wedding, I started reminiscing about all the previous weddings I attended the past year for my friends. The daunting task of choosing decorations, invitations, floral details, food selections, and locations suddenly became too overwhelming for me.

Inundated with a flood of information, I settled myself and started watching some YouTube clips of wedding ceremonies. What I wanted more than anything else in my wedding was for us to be officiated in a scenic location with close friends and family members.

Looking back at my friend’s wedding locations, one thing I appreciated was how romantic their setting was, whether it was at a well- known golf resort or a cliff overlooking the sea. Growing up in sunny Southern California, anything coastal related appeased me.

One of the YouTube clips that caught my attention was the wedding ceremony that took place on the beach side with the theme being everything beach related.  What really caught my eye amongst the backdrop was the adorable beach wedding favors they had adorning the tables. It looked like they had these metal crabs salt & pepper shakers and real starfishes with name tags attached.

With the gentle sea breeze rolling across the sand, the soft waves coming together with the shoreline, and the slight hue of orange from the sunset, the overall ambiance of their wedding brought tears to my eyes. Again, this coming from a guy!

I’m sure my future wife will probably end up making all of the decisions when it comes to our wedding, but I hope my two cents goes a long way so that I can stop crying like a little girl. Cheers.
