A Bit of History of the “Corset”

Old Century Corset

Old Century Corset

The “corset” has existed as far back as the early 16th and 17th century as an essential article of clothing used to shape the torso, support the back and support the bust.  They were tight and rigid and probably women back in those centuries did not do much labor. The Italians developed this little piece of undergarment and was introduced by Catherine Medici into France in the 1500s.  The corset was mainly worn as an undergarment that over the centuries help create the illusion of an hourglass figure for women.  It helped cinch the waist to look thinner and held the stomach in, creating a seamless support all around.  Hollywood has taken this look and created costumes that made us want to wear these corsets.

Memorable Corsets in Hollywood

We can recall movies such as Gone With the Wind, Amadeus, Titanic, Marie Antoinette, Dangerous Liaisons, and the new Cinderella that created great period pieces which the women who wore them were stunning, sexy, and beautiful.  Watching these movies made us want to look like them.

Modern Day Corsets

Now forward a few centuries, we look at corsets in a little different way.  Not only do they help hold all our unsightly baggage in place but it is also a fashion statement in some Designer’s Collections.  We never would have thought that a corset could be used as a “Fitness” accessory but it has resurfaced in this century as the new “Waist Training Corset”, made popular by some celebrities.
